Three weekends into the college baseball season and Auburn is the lone unbeaten SEC team on the diamond. The Tigers dispatched BYU in a three-game series this weekend on the Plains to improve to 12-0 on the season.
Auburn is off to the third-best start in school history and the Tigers 12 wins are more than any other team in the nation. Junior Brendan Venter is second in the SEC in hitting with a .500 batting average (22-for-44, 2 HR, 11 RBIs). On the mound, senior Calvin Coker (0.60 ERA) and freshman Tanner Burns (1.06 ERA) are among the Top 10 pitchers in the league.
Kentucky is averaging 10.5 runs per game in two wins over Houston and Sam Houston State at the 2018 Shriner’s Hospitals for Children College Classic at Minute Maid Park. Luke Heyer has homered three times in the first two games, giving him seven home runs on the season.
Mississippi State, who has played all 10 games away from home, is also 2-0 at the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children College Classic, with last at-bat wins over UL Lafayette and Houston (12 innings).
Outside the SEC, Jacksonville State has been impressive with two extra inning wins at Florida International this weekend. JSU scored six runs in the 12th inning to post a 12-6 win in Friday’s opener. The Gamecocks scored seven runs in the 10th inning on Saturday for a 13-6 series-clinching win.
