SEC Baseball Recaps (March 16)

sec-baseball-logoIt was Opening Night in the SEC. Alabama outlasted Georgia in 13 innings, while Casey Mize and Grant Koch helped Auburn and Arkansas to opening night wins. Mize punched out 13 batters in a 4-1 win over Texas A&M. Koch belted two home runs in a 9-4 win over Kentucky.

Alabama’s Hunter Alexander (0-for-8, 6 K) tied the NCAA single-game record with six strikeouts in the 13-inning win over Georgia. Sacramento State’s Brain McCall (vs. Pacific, May 7, 1996), Maine’s Peter Bushway (vs. Providence, May 13, 1983), Air Force’s Bob Wagner (vs. UC Santa Barbara, March 25, 1975) and Texas A&M’s Rob McAdams (vs. Texas, May 10, 1962) also had six strikeouts in one game in NCAA history.

On the national scene, USC and South Florida had no-hitters each of the last two nights. Kyle Hurt, Austin Manning and Connor Lunn combined on a no-hitter in the Trojans 2-0 win over Utah in the Pac 12 opener for both teams on Thursday night. It was the first no-hitter by USC since 1974.  South Florida also threw a combined no-hitter in a 14-0 win over Army on Friday night in Tampa. Shane McClanahan and Carson Ragsdale posted the first combined no-hitter in school history. It was the fourth no-hitter for USF, and first since 2010. That makes 13 no-hitters this season in college baseball.
