Austin is a great place to visit – Texas football, great food, great city and the Texas state capital.
The only missing in recent visits was Texas football. The Longhorns have been in a decade-long slump, but a decisive win over TCU on Sept. 22, quickly had Texas football back in the college football conversation. I covered Texas in its week one loss at Maryland.
Texas, you’ve come a long way baby. Continue reading “Texas-Sized Statement; Dinner at Fixe”
Another trip to Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock, Texas.
Another West Texas shootout.
This time Texas Tech won, something the Red Raiders had never done before my eyes.
Texas Tech snapped a six-game losing streak with a 63-49 win over Houston on Sept. 15.
Tech freshman QB Alan Bowman broke the Big 12 single-game freshman passing record with 605 yards. He completed 43-of-59 passes and threw five TDs in the win. Tech scored on four straight possessions in the second and third quarters to seize control of the game. Continue reading “Tech Gets First Win; Another West Texas Shootout”
The second week of the college football was a marquee match-up between two Pac 12 powers.
In rematch of the 2017 Pac 12 Championship Game, USC and Stanford met the 2018 Pac 12 opener at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto. It was one of two AP Top 25 matchups on Sept. 8. USC played in the Pac 12 Conference first game of the season for the eighth straight year. USC and Stanford have played in the Pac 12 opener six times in the last seven years, including five straight years (2014-18).
Stanford won a defensive struggle 17-3. It was the first time USC had been held without a touchdown since a 52-6 loss to No. 1 Alabama in the 2016 season opener. It was lowest scoring total since a 27-0 loss to Washington in 1997. Continue reading “Pac-12 Opener; So Long to the Oasis”

Prior to moving to Wright Stadium, the Mets played at J Fred Johnson Park, which was also the home to the Dobbins-Bennett HS baseball team. Dobbins-Bennett HS and Gate City (Vir.) HS play home games at Hunter Wright Stadium. Continue reading “A New Ballpark in Kingsport?”
