SEC Baseball Recaps (Tuesday, April 16)

sec-baseball-logoA full slate of SEC baseball on Tuesday spilled into Wednesday morning as Georgia won an epic 20-inning thriller over Clemson at Foley Field in Athens. Connor Tate delivered the walk-off single in the bottom of the 20th inning to score Tucker Maxwell with the winning run to cap the six-hour and 33-minute game.

The 20-inning game was longest game for both Clemson and Georgia, and it was the second-longest game in the NCAA this season. Penn defeated Dartmouth 21-15 in 21 innings on April 6, 2019.

Georgia tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning in a bizarre play down the left field line. Cam Shepherd doubled into the left field corner to send pinch-runner Steven Minter to third base. Clemson left fielder Chad Fairly accidentally threw the ball into the ground as the ball slipped out of his hand, and both runners scored on the error.

Clemson (26) and Georgia (24) set school records for most strikeouts in a game. The teams combined for 50 strikeouts in the game, one shy of the single-game NCAA record.

The teams combined to use 30 position player and 15 pitchers in the 20-inning game. Clemson used 13 position players and seven pitchers, while Georgia used 17 position players and seven pitchers.

Overall the SEC posted a 10-4 record on Tuesday night. The league split the four SEC-ACC matchups, with Georgia (Clemson) and South Carolina (North Carolina) posting wins, and Auburn (at Georgia Tech) and Kentucky (Louisville) suffering losses.
