SEC Baseball Recaps (Sunday, April 8)

sec-baseball-logoArkansas freshman Heston Kjerstad delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Razorbacks completed a three-game sweep of Auburn. Arkansas trailed 4-0 after three innings but rallied for the win. Eric Cole stroked a game-tying, two-run single in the seventh inning.

Florida, Kentucky and Miss State closed the weekend with series clinching wins. MSU got a walk-off, two-run home run for a 7-5, 11-inning win over rival Ole Miss. Kentucky hit four home runs in its 10-5 win over South Carolina. Tristan Pompey, Troy Squires, Luke Heyer and Luke Becker were a combined 8-for-15 with seven runs scored, four home runs and seven RBIs out of the top four spots in the batting order.

Florida posted a 6-4, 11-inning win over Tennessee in game one of Sunday’s double header at Tennessee but saw its nine-game winning streak end with a 6-4 loss in the night cap.

SEC Baseball Recaps (Friday, April 6)

sec-baseball-logoThe weather played a major factor as team’s scrambled to get games in on Friday. Alabama and Missouri moved their series opener to 1 p.m. in Columbia and the two clubs temperatures in 30s with wind gusts in excess of 30 miles per hour.  Georgia and Vanderbilt pushed their start time to 3 p.m. to avoid the expected weather in Nashville.

Two games were postponed on Friday due to weather issues.  Ole Miss and Miss. State cancelled Friday’s game early in the day and will now play a double header on Saturday beginning at Noon.  Florida and Tennessee were rained out in Knoxville and the forecast for Saturday calls for more inclement weather early in the day.  The Gator and Vols will play a 9-inning game on Saturday at 6 p.m. (ET) and will wrap up the series with a double header on Sunday at Noon (ET).

On the field, Kentucky pounded South Carolina 14-1 in Lexington. UK left fielder Tristan Pompey and catcher Troy Squires combined for 10 RBIs in the blowout win over the Gamecocks.

Arkansas RHP Blaine Knight out-dueled Auburn RHP Casey Mize in the Razorbacks 2-1 series opening win. Knight (6-0) allowed one run and six hits in 6.1 innings for the win. He added six strikeouts and one walk. Mize (6-1) suffered his first loss of the season as he allowed two runs and seven hits in seven innings. He added seven strikeouts and walked one batter, his first walk since March 3.

Texas A&M scored five runs in the first inning off LSU starter Casey Gilbert to even the series with the Tigers.

SEC Baseball Recaps (May 18)

Kentucky, Florida and LSU are all tied first place in the SEC standings with two games remaining in the regular season. All three teams have identical 19-9 records with two games remaining. Kentucky pounded out 20 hits en route to a 12-4 win over Florida on Thursday. LSU rode the pitching of ace RHP Alex Lange to a 3-1 win at Miss. State.

LSU can clinch the SEC Western Division championship with one more win over MSU. LSU can clinch the overall SEC Championship with two more wins over MSU and a split of the final two games between Kentucky and Florida. Miss. State can still obtain a share of the SEC Western Division title with two wins over LSU and one loss by Arkansas.  The Razorbacks are still mathematically alive in the SEC Western Division race. Arkansas can clinch the West with two more wins at Texas A&M and two wins by MSU over LSU.

Kentucky and Vanderbilt posted lopsided wins on Thursday. UK pounded out 20 hits in its 12-4 win over Florida in Gainesville.  Tristan Pompey blasted a fourth-inning grand slam to give UK a 4-3 lead. The Cats then cruised from there. Seven UK players recorded multi-hit games, including three hits from Evan White, Riley Mahan, Kyle Cottam and Marcus Carson. Vanderbilt steam rolled Alabama 18-1 in Nashville. The Commodores scored five runs in the first inning and added eight runs in the fourth. Six Commodores collected at least two RBIs in the win. Jason Delay led the way with four RBIs.

Thursday night was also filled with dominant pitching performances from Auburn’s Keegan Thompson, Georgia’s Andrew Gist, LSU’s Alex Lange, Missouri’s TJ Sikkema and Vanderbilt’s Patrick Raby.

Thompson hurled six no-hit innings in the win over Ole Miss. The game was interrupted in the seventh inning by a weather delay. Gist held South Carolina scoreless on one hit through six innings. He allowed one run on three hits in eight innings as Georgia clinched a berth in the SEC Tournament. Lange allowed a leadoff home run to Ryan Gridley but settled down and punched out 11 in the win over Miss. State.  Sikkema hurled a complete-game, four-hitter in the 5-0 win at Tennessee. Raby logged seven scoreless innings in the win over Alabama.

Kentucky’s Tristan Pompey and Missouri’s Matt Berler both hit grand slams on Thursday.

SEC Baseball Recaps (April 30)

Auburn, Mississippi State and Kentucky are all tied for first place in the SEC standings with a 14-7 conference record; Auburn won two out of three at Miss. State this weekend and owns the tie-breaker over the Bulldogs; MSU won two out of three from Kentucky in Starkville on April 7-9 and owns the tie-breaker over the Wildcats; Auburn and Kentucky do not meet in the regular season.

Seven teams are within one game of first place in the SEC standings with three SEC series remaining in the regular season; Arkansas, Florida, LSU and Texas A&M are all have identical 13-8 SEC records.

Kentucky won its first series at South Carolina since 1999 with a 9-4 win on Sunday; Florida and Texas A&M both completed weekend sweeps; the Gators topped Georgia 4-3, while Texas A&M swept Missouri with a 7-2 win on Sunday; Tennessee and Vanderbilt were rained out in Nashville.
