College Baseball Notebook (Feb. 21)

Bryce_Jarvis_PGA perfect game, two no-hitters and one triple play highlight Friday’s NCAA college baseball action.

Duke RHP Bryce Jarvis threw the first perfect game in Duke history in the 8-0 win over Cornell. Ottawa (NAIA) RHP Jared Gray fired the seventh no-hitter in school history in a 7-0 win over Ecclesia. A trio of Ole Miss pitchers fired a no-hitter in the series-opening win over Xavier.

Sam Houston State turned an around-the-horn triple play on Friday. It was their since 2017.

Southern Miss Trio Tosses No-Hitter

Gabe_ShepardA trio of Southern Miss pitchers tossed the first no-hitter in Conference USA Tournament history in the Golden Eagles 6-0 win over Rice in the C-USA semifinals on Saturday. With the win, USM advances to Sunday’s championship game against regular-season champion FAU. The Golden Eagles likely need a win on Sunday to make the NCAA Tournament.

Gabe Shepard threw 7 1/3 innings of no-hit baseball, striking out a career-best 12 and allowing only base runner on a lead off walk in the sixth inning.

Cody Carroll retired both batters he faced in the eighth inning and Hunter Stanley worked a perfect ninth inning to complete the first no-hitter by a C-USA team since UCF in 2008.

It was the seventh no-hitter in USM history and first by a Golden Eagles pitcher since Cliff Russum had a no-hitter against Eastern Illinois in 2004. Continue reading “Southern Miss Trio Tosses No-Hitter”

College Baseball Notebook (May 12-13)

NCAA LogoJacksonville State had a week to remember with four consecutive walk-off wins over Georgia and SIU Edwardsville … Samford wrapped up its first Southern Conference regular season championship with a sweep of Western Carolina … Navy and Army will square off this week for the Patriot League Championship with a best-of-three series in Annapolis.

College Baseball Notebook (May 11)

NCAA BaseballBall State got a combined no-hitter from John Baker (7 IP) and Lukas Jaksich (2 IP) in the 5-0 win over Ohio … It was the 11th Division I no-hitter this season and second in the last four days … It was the third no-hitter in program history … Jacksonville State recorded its third straight walk-off win with a 3-2 victory over SIU Edwardsville … Third baseman Nic Gaddis hit a walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth … Navy posted the 2000th win in school history in the Patriot League playoff win over Lafayette … Austin Peay hit six home runs in its 29-5 win at Eastern Illinois … Georgia Southern scored 27 runs in the double header sweep of Arkansas State … Georgia Tech catcher Kyle McCann hit two home runs in the Yellow Jackets 15-3 win at Duke … Indiana hit three home runs in a 10-6 series-clinching win at Michigan … It was the first series loss of the season for the Wolverines … Missouri State overcame a seven-run deficit to defeat Evansville 10-9. The Bears trailed 8-1 after five innings before scoring nine runs in its final four at-bats.

College Baseball Midweek Recaps

NCAA LogoSaint Peter’s pitcher/DH Hunter Mason hit a walk off 2-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Peacocks an 8-6 win. It was Mason’s second home run of the game. He also hit a 2-run homer in the first inning. Mason was also the winning pitcher with two scoreless innings in relief … Texas Tech rallied from a 9-run deficit to defeat UT Rio Grande Valley 19-11 to earn a split in the midweek series … UTRGV scored nine runs in the second inning to take a 9-0 lead … NAIA Conference Tournaments are underway across the nation … Master’s (NAIA) shortstop Aaron Shackleford went 4-for-4 with two home runs and five RBIs in a 16-4 elimination game win over Westmont in the GSAC Tournament … Shackleford has 28 home runs and 97 RBIs this season.

College Baseball Notebook (April 28)

NCAA LogoTexas State has won 10 straight games, the longest active winning streak in Division I baseball … The Bobcats are averaging 10 runs per game during the streak and have swept Arkansas State and UL Lafayette in back-to-back Sun Belt Conference series … Michigan has won eight straight games, the second-longest winning streak in Division I baseball … UM has swept Northwestern and Rutgers the last two weeks in Big Ten play … This is Michigan’s second 8-game winning streak of the season … The Wolverines opened the season with eight straight wins … Purdue Fort Wayne has a 15-game losing streak, the longest active streak in Division I .. The Mastadons (0-21 Summit) are the only Division I team without a conference win this season … Purdue Fort Wayne has lost 36 straight games to Division I opponents … Arkansas Pine Bluff (12), The Citadel (12), San Jose State (10) and Illinois State (10) also ended the week with double-digit losing streaks … New Mexico and Fresno State played to a 6-6 tie on Sunday, the ninth tie game of the season in Division I baseball … The game was called after nine innings due to the travel curfew … Nevada second baseman Keaton Smith hit for the cycle in the 26-15 win over Air Force. Smith went 4-for-7 with three runs scored and two RBIs … It was the 13th Division I cycle this year … Bellevue (Nebraska) senior JT Patterson recorded his third three-home run game of the season (NAIA record) in Sunday’s 16-0 win over Waldorf … Creighton senior LHP Denson Hull threw a complete-game shutout (7 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 5 K) in the 5-0 win over Xavier … Navy (34-15, 18-7) clinched the Patriot League regular season title with a 5-1 win over Lafayette. Navy is the first Division I team to clinch a conference championship this season … Oral Roberts outscored Purdue Fort Wayne 49-2 in the three-game series sweep … Penn State Harrisonburg (Division 3) hit 12 home runs in its weekend sweep of Frostburg State … Yale left-hander Kumar Nambair tossed his second consecutive complete-game shutout in the 4-0 win over Dartmouth … Saint Peter’s picked up its third win of the season with a 5-1 win over Fairleigh Dickinson … The Peacocks (3-36) have surpassed their  win total from the previous two seasons.

NCAA BaseballUCLA first baseman Michael Toglia was a one-man wrecking crew in the No. 1 Bruins 7-5 win over No. 9 East Carolina at Jackie Robison Field … Toglia (3-4, R, 2B, HR, 5 RBI) gave the Bruins the 7-5 lead with a 2-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning … He smacked a game-tying 3-run home run in the sixth inning to even the score at 5-5 … Bellevue (Neb.) University (NAIA) starting pitcher Stephen Knapp threw a 7-inning complete game to extend his scoreless streak to  26.2 innings … Illinois-Chicago senior right fielder Scott Ota belted two home runs and knocked in seven runs in the Flames 16-2 win over Northern Kentucky … Indiana Wesleyan (NAIA) senior Caleb Eder hit a school record three home runs in a 15-5 win over Bethel (Ind.) … Norfolk State set a program record with 44 runs scored in its double header sweep of Maryland-Eastern Shore … Omaha (13-1) suffered its first Summit League loss of the year in an 8-7 setback to Oral Roberts in the first game of Friday’s double header … Rice scored 10 runs in the second inning and cruised to a 19-4 win at Charlotte … Richmond scored 13 runs in the fifth inning to defeat Dayton 17-5 in the Atlantic 10 series opener.

College Baseball Diamond Notes (Mar. 30)

UASO PitcherSeton Hall and University of Sciences and Arts Oklahoma (NAIA) both tossed no hitters on Saturday … Five Seton Hall pitchers combined on the school’s third no-hitter in the last four years … Seton Hall pitched the fifth no-hitter in Division I baseball this season … USAO tossed its second no-hitter of the season on Saturday … It was the 13th no-hitter in NAIA baseball this year … Radford right fielder Adam Szamski had a historic day, going 6-for-6 with two doubles, two home runs and eight RBIs in the win over Winthrop … He tied the school record with six hits and 14 total bases … Indiana hit nine home runs in the 20-5 win over Maryland.

SEC Recaps (Tuesday, March 19)

sec-baseball-logoIt was a perfect night in SEC baseball on Tuesday as the league posted a 13-0 non-conference slate. No. 11 Arkansas cruised to an 11-4 win at No. 9 Texas. The Razorbacks got a grand slam from Christian Franklin and a solo home run from Heston Kjerstad in the six-run second inning. Auburn ran its winning streak to 14 games with a 13-5 win at UAB. Georgia won its 10th straight game with an 11-1 win over Georgia State. Alabama’s T.J. Reeves hit an inside-the-park home run in the Crimson Tide’s 16-0 win over Maine. Jake Mangum had five hits in the Miss. State’s win over Little Rock. TJ Hopkins hit two home runs in South Carolina’s 12-5 win at Furman.
